Weta Digital brings on board Avid Unity MediaNetwork 5.0

21 November 2007

New Zealand: Weta Digital, a visual effects facility based in New Zealand, has chosen Avid Unity MediaNetwork 5.0 storage, access, and shared media solution for its Wellington facility. In addition, it has adopted the Avid DNxHD 36 codec as the company's standard HD format for editorial use as well as for work supplied to clients. The company is currently involved in the production of James Cameron's Avatar for Twentieth Century Fox.
The MediaNetwork 5.0 system connects four Avid Media Composer version 2.7 fibre channel clients on two Macs and two PCs, as well as two Ethernet clients running Media Composer Adrenaline version 2.7, with 24TB of storage capacity. The new Avid system replaced a 6TB Avid Unity LANshare system which the company has outgrown due to increased workload. Designed for use in collaborative workgroup environments, Avid Unity MediaNetwork system is part of the company's set-up to house separate workspaces for each SD and HD project.
Adding to the new Avid system at Weta Digital is the DNxHD 36 codec which is suitable for work with large quantities of HD material as well as for projection by 2K digital projectors. The source code will be optimized to create DNxHD 36 encoded QuickTime videos on the facility render walls for quicker import into the Avid system.
