Macau: Cathay Cineplexes will be installing Sony’s new CineAlta 4K SRX-R220 digital cinema projectors, LMT-100 Media Block servers and LSM-100 Screen Management System in two of its cineplexes including its flagship The Cathay Cineplex by early 2008. Cathay is also planning to introduce Sony’s new system to its cinemas in Malaysia and Dubai.

Conforming to the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) specification requirements, Sony's CineAlta 4K digital projector is built on the SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology to offer up to 4K resolution which is more than four times the number of pixels under the HDTV specifications of 1920 x 1080. It also provides a brightness level of SMPTE standard 14 ft-L on a 20-meter (65.6-feet) wide screen and contrast ratio of 2000:1.

In addition, the LMT-100 Media Block is a digital cinema server that can handle DCI DCP (Digital Cinema Packages) media, a component for secure theater systems. The server handles DCP files that consist of picture, audio and subtitle data files which are wrapped into a MXF (Material eXchange Format) file. It plays back the DCP file by decrypting and decoding the picture data before sending it to the projector via a secure multi-pin connection system.

The LSM-100 Screen Management System provides a variety of screen management operations such as show scheduling, as well as communications with theatre control functions of the SRX series projectors and the Media Block.
