Anti-piracy sweep continues in Malaysia

18 December 2007

Hong Kong/ Malaysia – Malaysia’s Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (MDTCA), and the Malaysian Federation Against Copyright Theft (MFACT), which represents the Motion Picture Association (MPA), raided three pirate optical disc burner labs and a related printing facility in Johor on Dec 13.
One female worker in her 40s was arrested, 76 optical disc burners, 11,382 pirated discs DVDs and VCDs, 4,800 blank DVD-Rs as well as eight printers were seized. Authorities estimated the operations to have been able to produce four million pirated discs yearly to generate potential revenue of US$12 million.
The labs have been in operation for more than a year and were suppliers of pirated discs to street vendors in Johor Bahru. Among the discs seized were MPA member titles including Eragon, Ghost Rider, Meet the Robinsons, Night at the Museum, The Departed and local movies Impak Maksima and Nana Tanjung 2.
A total of 20 burner lab operations in Malaysia have been stopped this year.
