Internet in Taiwan on the rise, says Yahoo

19 November 2007

Taipei – Internet penetration among 15-39 year olds in Taiwan has hit 74% and will continue to rise, according to executives from Yahoo Kimo Taiwan.
Of Taiwan’s 12.5 million Internet users, 10 million are frequent users – up from 3 million in 1998. Amongst the 15-39 demographic, TV is the only medium to exceed the Internet’s popularity, with other media experiencing some decline in share since 2003.
Newspapers, still the most popular advertising medium, have seen a 7% decline in share over the past four years, with radio down 9%, monthly magazines off 6% and weeklies losing 2%.
Yahoo says daily Internet usage has risen from 21% in 2003 to 35% in 2007; with TV down from 54% to 43% over the same period – particularly amongst the young.
Internet advertising revenue in Taiwan is projected to rise from NT$2.7 billion (US$83 million) in 2003 to NT$8.8 billion (US$272 million) in 2010.
