SK Telecom to offer Sony Pictures Entertainment content via mobile VOD

29 January 2008

Seoul - SK Telecom has signed an agreement with Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) to license Sony Pictures Entertainment films and TV series for its mobile VOD services NATE and June.

To be available in full-length on mobile, Hollywood movies including the Spider-Man trilogy, The Da Vinci Code, Kungfu Hustle, Surf’s Up as well as TV series The Tudors will add to series such as Sex and the City and Rome which are already available on SK Telecom’s service.

The agreement with SPTI makes SK Telecom the first Korean company to have contracts with the six largest film studios in the world. SK Telecom plans leverage on the agreements to offer more diversified content including foreign movies and dramas to add to local content that is already available.

The charges for each show will range between KRW 1,000 - 2,000 (US$1.05 - 2.10) depending on the release date of the drama or film. Customers not subscribing to a flat-rate wireless Internet plan will also pay the data communication fee.

Soo Hyeok Lee, Vice President of Music Business Office at SK Telecom, said, “Mobile technology is evolving and the way of consuming video content is changing fast. These changes are expected to encourage more and more customers to watch movies and dramas on their mobile phones. We will continue to expand our partnership with media companies to enrich mobile-based video content services.”
