English business news channel UTVi to launch in India

2 April 2008

Mumbai - The Promoter group has unveiled UTVi, a new English business news channel to be launched in India. Positioned for the ‘growing business aspirations of a Young India’, UTVi aims to provide a 360-degree perspective on business, beyond stocks and shares, ‘de-jargonize’ financial markets and cater to Indian youth, entrepreneurs and senior executives.

Ronnie Screwvala, CEO, UTV Software Communications Ltd, said, “Till date the first mover in the business television space occupies 80% market share - which to us reflects a tremendous untapped opportunity.”

UTVi is expected to be an interactive news and information network that will connect real time news through platforms including TV, web and mobile. Arun Anant, CEO, UTVi and Govindraj Ethiraj, editor-in-chief, UTVi, have started a team to run the business, and have appointed Sumit Gupta as chief operating officer.

UTVi has also concluded a strategic content tie-up with Disney-ABC International Television (Asia Pacific), the international TV distribution arm of The Walt Disney Company, for ABC News programming and services. The content will provide a global perspective and international programming.

According to Ethiraj, UTVi is a channel built on consumer insights and understanding, and aims to grow India’s market for business news and information.

Shows planned for the channel will span the subjects of career, technology, automobile, travel and lifestyle. Group resources and industry experts have been engaged to produce feature shows, including partnering with IT Nation for technology shows, with Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee and rallyist Renuka Kirpalani for an auto show, as well as with Rashmi Bansal, editor of youth magazine JAM for a career show.

Broadcast Design International, a California-based agency is creating sets for the channel, while the graphics package and logo for UTVi News has been created by Renderon Broadcast Design, a Toronto based production and multimedia firm.
