Fixed-line operator China Netcom is looking to expand its IPTV trial service to 10 or more new Chinese cities later in 2008, adding to trials currently being conducted in six cities.
China Netcom vice president Jiang Zhengxin revealed that coordination work is in progress among various departments in the company to expand the trials, with the concrete plan expected to be unveiled before September 2008. Already, some 20 TV stations from Guizhou and Shijiazhuang have offered to pay China Netcom to carry their content on its new service.
The company is expected to develop a revenue-sharing model rather than adopt the approach of buying content outright.
Besides IPTV, China Netcom is developing multimedia content and applications to leverage its broadband network, and is already collaborating with educational software firms to offer content to broadband customers. The company also has plans to introduce new applications for learning English and to provide training for the national university exam.
