Doha - Al Jazeera Network has reported gains in distribution for both Al Jazeera English and the original Al Jazeera Arabic channels as the former’s reach expanded by 10million households to over 110million homes worldwide, while the latter is currently available to more than 50million households globally.
In Asia, Al Jazeera English was added by Vietnam’s VTC to be available to 2million households; Singapore’s SingTel launched the channel on IPTV service mioTV; while Al Jazeera English debuted in Hong Kong on PCCW’s now TV IPTV service and Hong Kong Cable’s i-CABLE service to reach the majority of the territory’s pay TV homes. Most recently, deals were closed with Filipino operators Global Destiny Cable, Eaglevision, Royal Cablevision and Ultravision to make the channel available to 500,000 households in the Philippines, while terrestrial broadcaster ABS-CBN is simulcasting the channel on weekdays on its ABS-CBN News Channel.
In Japan, a broadcast licensing deal was inked with Nippon TV’s BS11 channel to dub and rebroadcast 30-minute Al Jazeera English news segments from Kuala Lumpur. The agreement also provides BS11 access to Al Jazeera exclusive news clips for inclusion in its content. For China, a pact was sealed with the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games to make Al Jazeera Arabic available at the 2008 Games’ official venues and sites.
Al Jazeera Mobile recently launched services on Al Madar and Libyana in Libya, on Etisalat in Egypt and Yemen Mobile in Yemen, and will launch the Al Jazeera English mobile TV service with SingTel in May 2008. Al Jazeera English also marked its first anniversary on YouTube in Q1 2008, having drawn more than 21million video views in the 12 months since launch, and some 20,000 subscribers.
