Tokyo - Japanese production and post-production company, Imagica, has deployed a da Vinci Resolve image enhancement suite to perform HD colour grading for recent feature films including Crows Zero, Cyborg She and Koizora.

"For us, the most attractive feature of the da Vinci Resolve is the simplicity of operation that only nonlinear grading offers," said Osamu Iseki, head colorist, Imagica. "Our colorists appreciate how easy it is to learn. The Resolve has fit cleanly into our existing HD workflow, and in time, we expect to leverage its versatility so that we can use it as the basis of a 2K or 4K workflow."

Currently, Imagica is using the Resolve as a standalone system in conjunction with a telecine, but they are making plans to implement an integrated file-based workflow based on Resolve, thus enhancing conform efficiency and facilitating services including film restoration.

The da Vinci Resolve image enhancement system offers flexible, real-time throughput of nonlinear images in film, television, and commercial applications. The high-performance Resolve R-series exploits the power and efficiency of GPUs to surmount complex, computation-intensive challenges inherent in color finishing.

The Resolve R-series includes the R200 with two processors and one da Vinci Transformer board for image processing; the R250 with two processors and two Transformer boards; the R300 with four processors and one Transformer; and the R350 with four processors and two Transformers.

"The power of the Resolve system means it can enhance creativity and quality on sophisticated HD productions such as the effects-heavy Cyborg She, and the popular manga-based movie, Crows Zero," said Dean Lyon, da Vinci director of marketing. "In addition, Resolve's flexibility enables a post house to deploy it in a wide variety of workflow configurations, making it a very nearly future-proof investment."
