Top Picks in Post ==> leading asian post facilities2006
Once again, we have scoured Asia’s post industry in search of our yearly listings of the leading post facilities in the region.
1 October 2006
Apart from technical and creative suppor t, what most directors and producers look for in a post facility is something less tangible known as “personal serviceâ€. Indeed, this is something that the folks in post production need to constantly remind themselves about: Although you work in a creative environment, good customer relations is de rigueur in the service industry.
In view of this, an important criterion for picking a good post house lies in its ability to retain existing customers. Although we did not apply this yardstick to our current selection, we have come to realize that many of the companies we picked share this trait – in that they have been servicing repeat customers over and over again.
Personally, I believe that to be the best testimony a post facility can ever have. You may have the reputation for being the ‘best in the business’, but a loyal customer says: “You’re the best, regardless.â€
Perhaps we would implement this consideration as a new criterion next year. In the meantime, here’s our line-up for 2006:
Management Team Peter Barber, Director of Creative Services Paul Stevens, EP / Business Development Manager Dixie Wu, Senior Producer Caryne Chia, Senior Producer
Creative Team Damien Yang, Creative Director Tammy Quah, Senior Editor Charlie Ellis, Senior Colourist Freddie Coles, Animation Director Elena Ho, Head of Design
Our Main Clients Our clients come from Singapore,Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Japan, Indiaand Thailand.
Most Challenging tasks over the last 12 months 2006 is our third year of business and we have continued to expand steadily. BMD was set up with 3 persons and now we have a creative team of 20. This might seem quite dramatic growth in a short period of time but it has been necessary to meet the demand for our post services.
In building the team we have been lucky to find people who share the Blackmagic mindset of creativity and quality above all. This year we have strengthened our 3D, 2D and VFX design capabilities. We’re only interested in hiring the best creative talent and that reflects in our work.
One of the biggest challenges for 2006 has been meeting the demand for our creative services. The steady infl ux of work from our regular clients has been added to this year by a considerable amount of regional referral work, which has put us in the unenviable position of having to decline some projects.
While most TVCs are still fi nished in SD, long form work is almost completely HD now.
This past year HD has had time to permeate the local industry and uptake of the format, particularly for highend documentaries, has significantly increased. Being one of very few fully HD capable facilities in the region, and the only facility able to handle all HD formats including Panasonic DVCPRO HD, Varicam, D5 and Sony HDcam and HDcamSR, the number of HD projects coming through our doors has increased dramatically and constitutes over 90% of our long form business.
The other major change at Blackmagic Design this year is we have just added Telecine and Film Scanning services. The new acquisitions allow us to offer film transfers in SD and HD formats and also Data scanning at up to 4K, making Blackmagic Design Singapore’s first and only DI facility.
Our Finest Works over the last 12 months • NOKIA 6233, ‘Wimbledon’ • Smirnoff Ice, ‘G-Force’ • Bailey’s, ‘Wings’ • M1, ‘Boardroom / Sports News / Steam’.
Our Wish List for the year ahead The all too common assumption that ‘you have to go overseas to get an international looking job’ has to be overturned. We have had a number of small triumphs this past year in winning the confidence of Ad Agencies and keeping some major TVC campaigns in Singapore that would otherwise have defi nitely been posted overseas.
As more Singapore based Ad Agencies have positive experiences working with us, we look forward to retaining more of the major local projects and helping to put Singapore fi rmly on the world map as a centre for post production excellence.
We believe that international standard work can be done here in Singapore and we are doing our part to prove it. - Peter Barber, Director of Creative Services

At the moment the client and project name are confi dential but when released it will be one of the best works we have ever done. The requirement is to create a photo realistic animal but with humanlike animation. It is a very fi ne line between engendering personality and keeping the creature realistic. We have to be very careful whilst giving the animal subtle texture to keep the realism by adding colourful expressions such as anger, confusion, and contentment.

Most Challenging tasks over the last 12 months The acquisition and confi guration of the Lustre grading system and subsequent migration of our feature film work into the new environment has been the dominant task since late 2005 and continues to be so.
Our Finest Works over the last 12 months It is difficult to choose from so many projects that pass through The Post Bangkok in a 12 month period but some that come to mind include:
• Sony Bravia This is a good example of our growing maturi t y in the postproduct ion design area and is certainly a very stylish effort.
• Ponds White Beauty This did not involve a huge amount of advanced post on this job, rather a series of beautiful images that any colourist or digital artist would love to have on her reel.
• Ise Jingu This stunning 4-minute piece was commissioned by TYO of Japan to record a historical document of this very sacred but relatively obscure Japanese Temple. Because of the archival nature of the project, we have plans to re-construct it in 2K using Lustre as the central grading tool and then printing back to fi lm from the 2K master.
• i-ou Energy Drinks Ambitious CGI brief based on a man made of water which came off pretty well.
• Sony, Cyber-Shot It featured many ef f ects on almost every shot which was still accomplished effi ciently.

Lastly, barely 3 months old we have done around 30 ads, one 60-episode television series and a full length feature fi lm. One of our most notable achievements was the television series for ABS-CBN.
