Top Picks in Post ==> leading asian post facilities2006

Once again, we have scoured Asia’s post industry in search of our yearly listings of the leading post facilities in the region.

1 October 2006

Apart from technical and creative suppor t, what most directors and producers look for in a post facility is something less tangible known as “personal service”. Indeed, this is something that the folks in post production need to constantly remind themselves about: Although you work in a creative environment, good customer relations is de rigueur in the service industry.
In view of this, an important criterion for picking a good post house lies in its ability to retain existing customers. Although we did not apply this yardstick to our current selection, we have come to realize that many of the companies we picked share this trait â€" in that they have been servicing repeat customers over and over again.
Personally, I believe that to be the best testimony a post facility can ever have. You may have the reputation for being the ‘best in the business’, but a loyal customer says: “You’re the best, regardless.”
Perhaps we would implement this consideration as a new criterion next year. In the meantime, here’s our line-up for 2006:

Most Challenging tasks over the last 12 months
2006 is our third year of business and we have continued to expand steadily. BMD was set up with 3 persons and now we have a creative team of 20. This might seem quite dramatic growth in a short period of time but it has been necessary to meet the demand for our post services.
In building the team we have been lucky to find people who share the Blackmagic mindset of creativity and quality above all. This year we have strengthened our 3D, 2D and VFX design capabilities. We’re only interested in hiring the best creative talent and that reflects in our work.
One of the biggest challenges for 2006 has been meeting the demand for our creative services. The steady infl ux of work from our regular clients has been added to this year by a considerable amount of regional referral work, which has put us in the unenviable position of having to decline some projects.
While most TVCs are still fi nished in SD, long form work is almost completely HD now.
This past year HD has had time to permeate the local industry and uptake of the format, particularly for highend documentaries, has significantly increased. Being one of very few fully HD capable facilities in the region, and the only facility able to handle all HD formats including Panasonic DVCPRO HD, Varicam, D5 and Sony HDcam and HDcamSR, the number of HD projects coming through our doors has increased dramatically and constitutes over 90% of our long form business.
The other major change at Blackmagic Design this year is we have just added Telecine and Film Scanning services. The new acquisitions allow us to offer film transfers in SD and HD formats and also Data scanning at up to 4K, making Blackmagic Design Singapore’s first and only DI facility.
Our Finest Works over the last 12 months

Our Wish List for the year ahead The all too common assumption that ‘you have to go overseas to get an international looking job’ has to be overturned. We have had a number of small triumphs this past year in winning the confidence of Ad Agencies and keeping some major TVC campaigns in Singapore that would otherwise have defi nitely been posted overseas.
As more Singapore based Ad Agencies have positive experiences working with us, we look forward to retaining more of the major local projects and helping to put Singapore fi rmly on the world map as a centre for post production excellence.
We believe that international standard work can be done here in Singapore and we are doing our part to prove it. - Peter Barber, Director of Creative Services

Our Finest Works over the last 12 months
• Uncle Toby’s Australia, Clemenger BBDO Sydney, Granny We have worked on many great projects in the last twelve months. One of the most memorable ones being the series of three animated TVCs for Uncle Toby’s Australia with Clemenger BBDO Sydney titled “Granny”. It was a great project as we were involved right at character concept stage when the agency was pitching the concept to the client. We love being involved at this time as it enables our creatives to work with the agency creatives to produce a great product.
• Ross Tinney Films, Pepsodent Another memorable project was Pepsodent with Ross Tinney Films. We had all our production meetings via telephone and video conferences with Ross and his team in Indonesia and the communications were excellent. It was such a smooth process with our vfx team sending Quicktime fi les and animation sequences via the internet for approvals daily. The production company and agency then joined us in Australia for the fi nal days of compositing.
Our Wish List for the year ahead
Our philosophy continues to be our focus each year. To service our clients to the highest possible standard we can, whilst pushing the boundaries with our creative on every project. FSM’s work flow has increased considerably over the past year and to maximize our growth and popularity, we have had to increased our staffi ng by 15% and introduce a third Flame suite. In the last 12 months, we have also constructed arguably the best 3D and design facility in Sydney, including the hiring and assembling of some of the hottest 3D and 2D designers town. FSM has also installed one of the most sophisticated Digital Intermediate suites in Australia, which provides up to 6K scanning on a Northlight scanner and full DI grading with 2K projector and theatre.

We are in product ion of a very challenging but exciting project for a major client in Japan. At the moment the client and project name are confi dential but when released it will be one of the best works we have ever done. The requirement is to create a photo realistic animal but with humanlike animation. It is a very fi ne line between engendering personality and keeping the creature realistic. We have to be very careful whilst giving the animal subtle texture to keep the realism by adding colourful expressions such as anger, confusion, and contentment.

Most Challenging tasks over the last 12 months
Our most challenging task has been establishing a hi-tech Digital Intermediate Colour Grading Theatre, which is the fi rst in South East Asia. It is equipped with Da Vinci’s Resolve (a real-time 2K colour corrector), a Sony 4K projector and a Sony custom-made 4.5- meter screen. It is the closest setting to a movie theatre that allows our colourists and clients to see the elements on the screen as they will appear in a movie theatre to get the ultimate “big screen” feel and to achieve color precision right from the beginning.

Most Challenging tasks over the last 12 months
The acquisition and confi guration of the Lustre grading system and subsequent migration of our feature film work into the new environment has been the dominant task since late 2005 and continues to be so.
Our Finest Works over the last 12 months
It is difficult to choose from so many projects that pass through The Post Bangkok in a 12 month period but some that come to mind include:
• Sony Bravia
This is a good example of our growing maturi t y in the postproduct ion design area and is certainly a very stylish effort.
• Ponds White Beauty
This did not involve a huge amount of advanced post on this job, rather a series of beautiful images that any colourist or digital artist would love to have on her reel.
• Ise Jingu
This stunning 4-minute piece was commissioned by TYO of Japan to record a historical document of this very sacred but relatively obscure Japanese Temple. Because of the archival nature of the project, we have plans to re-construct it in 2K using Lustre as the central grading tool and then printing back to fi lm from the 2K master.
• i-ou Energy Drinks
Ambitious CGI brief based on a man made of water which came off pretty well.
• Sony, Cyber-Shot
It featured many ef f ects on almost every shot which was still accomplished effi ciently.
• Plus City Park, Design
This represents a great online design effort complete with stylish visuals and the benefi t of a tape-totape colour grade at the end.
Our Wish List for the year ahead
We hope to be home for all film makers, to be the best in DI service and also, to achieve a high profi le in major world fi lm markets.
Which X-men character best describes your outfit, and why?

Most Challenging tasks over the last 12 months
One of the first challenges was setting up of our facility in thirty days from the ground up.
The second challenge would have been getting some of the brightest artists to work for us. We were up against time, as we had to set up and hire our most of staff simultaneously. This was done in almost one month’s time.
Lastly, barely 3 months old we have done around 30 ads, one 60-episode television series and a full length feature fi lm. One of our most notable achievements was the television series for ABS-CBN. The series, which is expected to revolutionize network television series in the Philippines, involves visual effects on-site supervision, CG and visual effects through online and grading. Larger Than Life has been tasked to do 60 twenty-two minute episodes.
Our Finest Works over the last 12 months
We have done a considerable number of Television commercials in the last four months of operation, ranging from promotional material, tacticals to thematic ads. We can safely say that although we are barely half a year in the business, we have worked with the brightest minds and some of the biggest names in the industry, including most of the major advertising agencies. I feel our fi nest works are the ones we did these past few months.
Our Wish List for the year ahead
We hope to raise the quality of the local film and television industry and aim to be one of the leaders in Digital Intermediate in the Asia Pacifi c region.
