Phuket Film Festival shuttered due to uncertainty over ASEAN meet

13 May 2009

Bangkok - The organisers of the Phuket Film Festival have called off the event, which was scheduled to run from 4 – 11 June 2009.
Festival organisers were concerned about possible disruptions caused by road blocks, traffic jams, etc. as a result of a rescheduled ASEAN ministers meeting. The meeting has since been moved to a later date.
The Festival was to play 30 award winning films from 13 different countries and was set to host over 30 filmmakers, producers and sales agents from around the world including Academy Award winning actor Adrien Brody (The Pianist), acclaimed director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Huntin"), and Directors Guild of America nominated director Darnell Martin (Cadillac Records).
"We sincerely apologise to our partners, participating film makers and those on Phuket who were helping to make this international event happen," said festival organiser, Scott Rosenberg.
"We're saddened that this event which was growing in stature in the world of film festivals was not …. to carry on in a manner which would have showcased the Phuket region as a prime location destination for filming," said Rosenberg.
"Filmmakers view the world in terms of images: we don't want them walking away from the Phuket Film Festival with memories of armed soldiers and tanks - no matter what the reason," Rosenberg added.
