SmartJog’s DiBianca gives insight to HD workflows

19 June 2009

SmartJog USA’s vice-president Joe DiBianca shared with conference delegates the ins and outs of planning workflow for receiving and sending HD content in a presentation entitled ‘Work it out: Discovering workflows for digitally sending and receiving HD content’. The presentation was part of the ‘Production Workflow and Compression’ tract of the BroadcastAsia 09 conference programme.

During his presentation, he shared with the 50-member audience solutions on how to face challenges of receiving HD content in the Asia-Pacific region and creating a seamless HD distribution workflow. He also emphasised the need for broadcasters and distributors to keep up with rapid changes in technology including the development of acceptable file formats.

“Distributors will not be able to keep up with the individual requirements of each broadcaster, so broadcasters need to fully understand their current technology and find ways to work with the files they are receiving including transcoding files into a more useable format,” DiBianca said.

“In addition, broadcasters need to be pro-active in testing with distributors in order to decide on a preferred file format and specifications when receiving files digitally. Initially, setting up the workflow may take some time and involve testing but once completed, the time you put into creating the workflow will provide broadcasters with the many advantages of digital delivery,” he revealed.

DiBianca presented considerations from the varied perspectives of the distributor, content provider and broadcaster. He shared the challenges faced with managing different available digital formats and the thought processes companies in transition from traditional to digital formats should be wary of.

“As broadcasters add HD and HD-VOD channels to their line-ups, they need a reliable and cost efficient way to receive HD digital content. Physical tape shipment and FTP technology are becoming outdated as new delivery methods are available to meet servicing needs, both in terms of efficiency and cost,” he added.
