Switch to digital TV could see change in viewing patterns
21 June 2009
A poll in the Financial Times done for Harris Corporation, a communications and technology company, found that younger audiences were more likely to switch to free-to-air TV and supplement it with online video as a result of the switch to digital signal in the USA. Television stations across America stopped broadcasting in analogue to comply with a 13 June deadline for the country to switch to digital broadcast. The decade-long effort was scheduled for earlier this year but was delayed to better prepare consumers for the switch. The main reason for the move is to free up the airwaves in the analogue spectrum for wireless services and emergency communications. The transition to digital TV will also bring clearer pictures to goggle boxes in the US.As it will allow broadcasters to provide more free-to-air channels, the switch might affect cable TV and satellite TV subscriptions. Even then, analysts estimate that some two million homes have not yet installed digital converter boxes, which means they will not be able to watch TV.
