Korea to air more historical documentaries in 2010

Korea - Networks MBC, KBS and SBS will be airing more documentaries touching on historic events and current issues, according to The Korea Times.

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Japan’s annexation of Korea, the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, the 50th anniversary of the 4/19 Student Movement and the 10th anniversary of the inter-Korean Summit. As such, major networks are preparing to captivate fans with documentaries shedding light on these historical events.

KBS is bringing Our 50 Years, Korea’s 50 Years, featuring the 4/19 Movement and the people involved with it. The four-episode documentary Sovereignty Lost, The Question We Ask Ourselves will examine the issue of the annexation treaty that was signed in 1910. KBS shows will focus on unification with shows like War and Peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Japan and The 20 Years of Germany’s Unification.

MBC will produce a television series that focuses on the life and achievements of independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun and also a series that will shed new light on the Korean War. SBS is introducing various shows under the theme 2010 History Production Project, including the documentary drama 6/25 in a New Light: The Big Battle and documentaries 4/19, An Unfinished Movement and The Collapse of an Empire.

KBS is producing five documentaries about the environment including The Last Legacy of the Green Earth and Exploration of Life in East Asia: The Amur River. The networks will also introduce green technology to viewers through their program Green Earth and The Architecture of Animals. MBC will feature Tears in the Antarctic, the final installment to Tears in the Earth project. SBS is lining up a three-episode documentary project about the Tundra, and also the life and restoration of Asiatic Black bears in the Mt. Jiri region.
