Canon goes 50Mbps 4:2:2 with XF305 and XF300 pro-spec camcorders
8 April 2010
Singapore - Canon today announced its much-awaited professional camcorders, the XF305 and XF300, each capable of recording 1920 x 1080 Full HD video in MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps Canon XF codec. The company’s latest camcorders come with hot-swappable dual UDMA CF card slots, Canon 18x HD L-series lenses and Canon’s latest DIGIC DV III image processor.
Designed with input from professional users, the XF305 and XF300 use an MXF (Material eXchange Format) File Wrapper, a widely supported open source format, to maximise compatibility with existing industry infrastructure and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. Genuine Canon 18x HD L-series lens offers an optical image stabilization system, providing documentary filmmakers and news camera operators with the focal-range versatility required in the field. Canon Singapore’s assistant manager for professional video products Johnny Ng says this would be a boon to the large community of independent filmmakers in South and Southeast Asia.
Each of the new models also comes with a 4-inch 1.23-megapixel LCD preview screen that can be positioned on either side of the camera. Other features include a built-in waveform monitor and vectorscope, and well as dual XLR inputs for external audio sources. A day before its APAC rollout, Singapore production house Film Mall ran the XF305 through its paces. Commenting on the versatility of the camcorder, director of photography David Foo said a professional camcorder in its class, he says, "there’s really no compromise".
To maximise the camcorders’ adaptability across various production environments, Canon equipped each model with the ability to record at multiple bit rates, resolutions and variable frame rates for slow and fast motion:
Mode: 50Mbps (CBR) 4:2:2 - Resolution and frame rates: 1920 x1080 60i/30p/24p and 1280 x 720 60p/30p/24p Mode: 35Mbps (VBR) 4:2:0 - Resolution and frame rates: 1920 x1080 60i/30p/24p and 1280 x 720 60p/30p/24p Mode: 25Mbps (CBR) 4:2:0 - Resolution and frame rates: 1440 x1080 60i/30p/24p
The XF305 will be distinguished by its “jack pack,” which will include HD SDI output, genlock and timecode terminals. Canon estimates retail prices at US$7,999 for the Canon XF305 and US$6,799 for the Canon XF300 when they are made available in late June.
