Eleventh pirate DVD burner lab shut down in Malaysia
Hong Kong/Malaysia: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (MDTCA), with support from the Malaysian Federation Against Copyright Theft (MFACT), representative of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) in Malaysia, seized 323 DVD-R burners from the 11th DVD-R burner lab taken down in 2008, following a raid in Kajang.
The raid net 30,000 pirated discs which infringed MPA-member company titles including Jumper, Hitman, Cloverfield and The Spiderwick Chronicles. The DVD-R lab has been in operation for about four months and is estimated to have a production capacity of 17.4 million pirated discs, potentially generating US$51.2 million in revenue.
In addition, March 26, 2008 saw the enforcement team raid a burner lab in Kuala Lumpur which yielded 69 DVD-R burners and 50,000 pirated DVD and CD games discs for the PC platform.
The seizures bring the total number of burners seized for the year to 1,453, a 945% increase year-on-year from the corresponding first quarter in 2007.
